Homemade High Value Dog Treats
While these homemade dog training treats are oven-baked to get a nice hard crunch to them. They can be given as a soft treat too!
I normally try to stick to crunchy treats as it is better on their teeth. But there are many reasons you would feed a soft training treat, such as an older dog, one with dental issues, or just as a personal preference (like, no crumbs left behind!).
Dogs go crazy for this mix of liver and banana! So they will be doing anything they can for you to give them another treat.

Dog Training Treats Recipe
Skill: Easy to make
Recipe Makes: about 5 cups
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: about 15 minutes (less if you make smaller pieces)
Homemade Dog Training Treats Ingredients
- some liver sprinkles
- water
- an over-ripe banana
- whole wheat flour
- coconut oil
How to Make Homemade Dog Training Treats
Preheat oven to 400 F.
Peel the banana and add it to the food processor with coconut oil and liver sprinkles. Mix until well blended.
Then add 2 cups of flour and water to the mix. Mix until fully blended.
With the rest of the flour, dust the counter or pastry mat. Then dump the dough mixture onto the floured surface.
With your hands, press the mixture into a ball.
Using your hands or better yet a rolling pin if you have it, flatten the ball until it is about as double-thick as a pie crust.
Using a knife or pizza cutter (a pizza cutter is much easier) cut the dough into strips. Then cut across those strips to make small pieces.
I made pieces about 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch. But you can cut to any size you want.
Put the pieces on a silicone mat on a baking sheet. Make sure to space them out so they don’t touch. I had to do 3 cookie sheets to bake all of mine. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 for 15 minutes.
Note: if you cut your pieces smaller, you will need to bake them for less time. Keep an eye on them and take them out when they are lightly golden brown.
When done, remove from oven and allow to cool. Then store it in an air-tight container or plastic bag.
How to Make Soft Dog Training Treats
If you are not wanting to use these as a crunchy training treat, they can be used as a soft treat too.
To use these as a soft treat, you pretty much do all the same steps but just skip a few. Follow all the same steps for a regular recipe, except skip the baking step.
This is also a great way to make even the tiniest-sized treats for small dogs or to give just an even smaller treat.
The one thing to note about using these as a soft treat is they will not last as long as when they are baked. But if you are planning to use up within 3-4 days then they will be fine. I keep them in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer
Can These Training Treats Be Used In Busy or Kong Toys?
The short answer is YES!
Depending on the sizes you cut the treats, they can be used in a wide variety of dog busy toys and Kong toys!
No more having to spend a lot of those special treats to fit those toys.
