DIY Snuffle Mat

This DIY snuffle mat is such an easy Dollar Tree dog craft! Not only can it be used as a mat but it can also be used as a dog bed.

While this DIY dog snuffle mat is a super easy craft, it does take some time to do. It takes about 3 hours to make. That includes the time to cut the fabric. But it is also a great project to work on with a few people.

A colorful, textured DIY snuffle mat with pastel fabric strips next to a purple bone-shaped dog toy, labeled "heart string pets".

We made this to be a mat to hide treats in for the dogs to keep them busy. However, it can also be used as a DIY dog bed or even a small rug for the house or kid’s room if you wanted.

Another great thing is you can change this up to fit your style if you want. We used two different colors to make our mat. But you could do it all in one color or lots of different colors. You could also mix the colors throughout instead of making color rings as we did.

Because we made this as a Dollar Tree craft, we used their fleece baby blankets as our fabric. But you could use any fleece fabric.

How to Make a Snuffle Mat

A pair of red scissors lies on a cutting mat next to a piece of fleece fabric with a cloud pattern, indicating a DIY snuffle mat project in progress.

The first thing you need to do is to cut the outer stitched edge off all of the blankets.

A rotary cutter and a yellow ruler are placed diagonally across a fabric with printed patterns for a DIY snuffle mat on a cutting mat with grid lines and measurements.

Now fold the blankets in half as evenly as you can. They will not be a perfect size so just get them as close as you can. Cut the blanket into strips that are about 1-inch wide.

A piece of cut fabric on a board with measurements and a cutting tool.

Now cut those strips into about 9-inch long sections. I got 3 pieces from each strip. It is totally ok if they are not all the same size.

Repeat these steps until you have all of your blankets cut up into strips.

Pick the color/print you want to start with. We started with the blue blanket with clouds. Now fold one of the 9-inch strips in half.

Push the looped end through the backside of one of the holes on the mat. You should have what looks like a little loop sticking through.

Then take the ends of that piece fold them up and feed them through that loop.

A piece of blue and white fabric with yellow spots, intended for a DIY snuffle mat, is being pulled through one of the holes in a clear plastic snap plier tool, resting on a grid

From that loop, pull those end pieces through until the whole thing is nice and tight and attached to the mat.

Fabric strips tied to a piece of grid hardware cloth above a ruler for measurement, likely a DIY snuffle mat project in progress.

Repeat this step and work your way around the mat. When you are all the way around move up to the next row of holes and do another few layers of this color before changing colors.

You can loop it on the upright sections too. You will have to skip a few places here and there as things will be a little too tight.

A colorful DIY fleece tie blanket with a patterned design and a logo in the center.

If keeping with the pattern/colors we used you will have 3-4 rows of cloud color switch over to the hearts. And you want to do 3-4 rows with this fabric before switching back to the first color.

After doing the hearts we did another few rows of clouds before finishing off the center with hearts. But feel free to do it how you want. You could do it all in one color, mix the colors throughout, and just make it the way you want it.
