I love the idea of this being a two-sided DIY over the collar dog bandana. Because if you are not in the mood to see one color or print, you can simply flip it over and have it on the other side.

How to make a homemade dog bandana

Start by laying both of the fabrics so that they are face down.

A piece of paper with a dog bandana pattern, a pen, and scissors on it.

Lay the cut-out pattern on top of the fabrics and pin it to the fabric to hold it in place.

Next, use the pen or fabric chalk to mark the pattern all the way around so it makes a line on the fabric.

Unpin the pattern. Use the scissors to cut the fabric pieces out. You should have one piece cut out from each of the fabrics that will be used to create a two-sided dog bandana.

Now lay the triangle pieces on top of each with the correct sides touching. Then pin or clip together each side.

Use about a 1/4 seam allowance to sew them together. Sew down the two sides that are pinned but leave the top open.

Turn it right side through the top open area then iron the bandana so that it is nice and flat.

Making the collar area and attaching

Lay the long strips on top of each other with the right sides touching. Pin together along one of the longest sides.

Then sew them together along the pinned side. Use about 1/4 sem allowance here too.

After you sew it, lay it face down and iron it so that the seam flaps are opened.

A piece of fabric with a heart shape and a dog bandana pattern.

While it is still laying face down, fold each of the ends over by 1/4 inch or just slightly over 1/4 and pin it in place.

Sew the pinned ends down. This time you want to try to stay about the middle of that fold. Do both ends.

Then fold it in half along the long seam and iron flat.

Then on the open end of the triangle, fold the raw fabric edge in by about 1/4-inch. Insert the raw edge side of the long pieces inside of the triangle piece and pin it in place.

And the last thing to do is to sew them together.

Then you want to sew across the pinned pieces to sew together. But this time do a backstitch at the start and finish with this to make sure everything is locked in place.

So simply slide the collar through the open ends of the bandana and put it on the dog.
