You can use a diy toothpaste for dogs to keep your dog’s teeth clean.

Homemade Dog Toothpaste Ingredients

You only need a few ingredients to make this minty toothpaste for dogs.

• a few fresh mint leaves (dog-safe mint of choice is fine)
• baking soda
• coconut oil
• water

How to Make Dog Toothpaste

Start by chopping the mint leaves until they are fine little pieces. They need to be pretty small so they will mix in well.

Grab a small dish or bowl and add the baking soda, water, chopped mint, and coconut oil. With a fork or spoon mix it all together until it is fully blended.

While this dog toothpaste could be used right away if you needed it, it will have a stronger mint flavor to it if you let it sit a few hours. The oils of the mint work through the rest of the past with time.

How to use dog toothpaste

Apply just a small amount of toothpaste to a dog toothbrush or finger toothbrush. Gently lift the dog’s upper lip and then touch the toothbrush to the teeth to start brushing.

If your dog has never had its teeth brushed, you may have to start slow and get them used to it first. You can do this by letting them lick a little past to start.

Then lift their lips and hold for a second or two then reward them with homemade dog training treats. After a few times of doing that with them tolerating it, move on to just touching their teeth with your fingers.

Then when they are tolerating that, move on to touching their teeth with the toothbrush and keep working your way up like this until you can brush their teeth.

Make sure that throughout all of these steps you frequently praise them. It is not natural for them to have their teeth brushed so praising them and giving rewards is recommended.

How often should I brush my dog’s teeth is a question we have heard a lot. Unlike humans, dogs do not need their teeth brushed a few times a day or even every day.

You want to aim to brush their teeth just 1 to 2 times per week. To help keep tarter and dental care in check, you should also take other measures as well. Such as feeding dry/hard food.
